Drive-it Day at Crofton Beam Engines
Crofton Beam Engines is a unique Georgian Pumping Station set in the heart of rural Wiltshire. Built to feed the highest point of the Kennet and Avon Canal with water, the site includes the oldest working Beam Engine in the world, still in its original location, still performing the function for which it was originally built on special days. Those special days include Drive It Day. Dating back to 1807 the site reflects the glory days of the Industrial Revolution and includes views across Brunel's Great Western Railway (now the main line between Paddington and Penzance), the Kennet and Avon Canal and the glorious Wilton Water beyond. See our website for more details.
Many of our volunteers have classic cars and we welcome all classic car owners to Crofton to share our experiences, to visit the Pumping Station with its Beam Engines and to support NSPCC's Childline. We have ample car parking including disabled spaces. Drivers of classic cars will be offered entrance at discount on the normal entry fee to the Pumping Station. Our boiler will be in steam and mighty beam engines will be pumping a tonne of water a stroke to top up the Kennet and Avon Canal. See our web site for more details. Our Smithy Tea Room will be open offering a fine selection of hot and cold drinks, cakes, and savoury snacks.
No need to book in advance but if you are coming in a large group if you can let us know if advance we will do our best to reserve parking for your group.
For the NSPCC, we will have leaflets and collection points for you to find out more about the NSPCC or to make a donation (cash only).
